ABOUT US
by Doug Bannister
The spark of One Day Floors™ was my hearing about a coating that outperformed all others. I was skeptical, of course, because as many in the decorative concrete business painfully acknowledge, sealers can be our Achilles heel.
A knowledgeable industry colleague told me about a promising sealer that could be applied in most any condition: heat and cold; arid or humid, inside or outside. You can imagine how anxious I was to try some of this new “wonder” sealer. This was the fall of 2006. I bought a small quantity of polyaspartic, but I was not all that impressed with its adhesion properties and didn’t do anything further until six months later when two representatives from a cabinet shop in our industrial park, in fact, they are directly across the street here, came strolling in explaining that they wanted to grow their garage cabinet business and needed to offer a chip/flake floor that could be done in a single day. I told them that I did have a two day and a three day system, but that I would get back with them soon about a single day system.
I called my friend who first told me about polyaspartics to ask more questions. He pointed me to Joe Sheehan, a garage floor installer in Minneapolis MN, who turns out to be the most knowledgeable guy in the country when it comes to installing floors where polyaspartic is involved whether it be quartz, chip or stain. Joe’s brother, Jerry is also an installer and operates in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I flew to meet with Joe and the manufacturer of his polyaspartic on one of Joe’s Minneapolis garage floor jobs in October of 2007. Everything Joe told me over the phone was true – the floor was completed in one day, including the grinding, not two or three days like the floor systems I had at that time.
Joe explained that when he and Jerry first started working with polyaspartics they were not really that well suited for chip floors (which mirrored my first experience). Joe offered his expert observations and expectations to the chemists who modified the characteristics of the coating until they met with Joe’s approval. Because the climates of Minneapolis and Ft. Lauderdale vary so much Joe and Jerry concluded that if the same formulation would work for these two very different climates that chances are it would work anywhere in the country. As the polyaspartic was being modified to suit Joe and Jerry they continually revised the installation processes to ensure the proper profiling and preparation of the floor as well as the application of the color coat, bed coat, media (chips of quartz) and the top coats were top of the line. This is where Joe’s term “Prep Perfect” came into being and is recognized in the industry as meaning that if the procedures are followed you end up with a perfect floor.
I negotiated with Joe and Jerry that they conduct the certification training for One Day Floors™. We exhibited One Day Floors™ at the 2008 WOC winning a Most Innovative Product award in the Decorative Concrete Division. It became clear to me that we needed to have greater control of the blending of the polyaspartic to insure both more consistent quality and more timely delivers. Cimarron, our wholesale distribution company, now controls the manufacturing and distribution operations for One Day Floors™.
One Day Floors™ is committed to having the best products including cove base, quartz, chips, dyes, stains, pigments and clears as well as the most experienced trainers and training programs. One Day Floors™ will soon have AIA specifications and ASTM data that will further set the system apart.
